Dixie’s Republican Congressional Prospects
In a post-census redistricting year, both parties could gain a few congressional seats in the South. Last week’s analysis of Democratic opportunities indicated the Democrats are more or less favored to gain four seats, with possible victories in as many as six other seats. On the Republican side, which we look at this week, we find the GOP ahead, to a greater or lesser degree, in seven districts, with a chance in three others. The bottom line is that Republicans should net about three seats, if current conditions prevail through November 6. The caveat for the GOP is that both national and state polls are currently showing a marked trend to the Democrats. If this is not reversed, or at least stabilized, in the next five weeks, Democratic gains could be greater.
